Description
Largest Indian bat, head rusty brown, snout much darker hind neck and shoulders pale brownish, undersides yellowish brown, large brilliant eyes.
Food
Herbivorous (mainly frugivorous). It thrives almost exclusively on fruits.
Distribution
All parts of Gujarat state.
Habitat
Forest areas, wood lands, cities and towns (gujarat).
Behaviour
Flying fox is chiefly nocturnal. It roosts in large nois colonies. It usually flies on the same route in search of food It is very destructive in the fruit orchards.
Signs of presence
Noise of the flying foxes at the roost, spat out fruit parts.
Flving foxes leave their respective roosts half an hour after the sun-set. Theu remarkable memory about the time of fruiting and location of fruit-bearing trees. As far fruits are concerned, they mainly feed on juice of fruits. Its flesh is eaten in many nan the country. Flying fox is rare in western Rajasthan, Kachchh and Sind.
