Physical measurements & life cycle: 

Length : Female-17.7-22.0 m Male-24-27 m 

Weight : 30-80 tons.

 Maturity : 6-7 years  

Description 

This Fin whale has shorter flippers (i.e., about 1/9th of the total length). Its body is bluish grey from above and whitish from below. About 1/3rd of the baleen plates from snout on right side are whitish while the remaining plates are blue grey. There are 60-90 ventral grooves. 

Food

Carnivorous. It feeds on poo prawns and other crustaceans. 

Distribution

Gulf of Kachchh, Gulf of Khambhat and other marine habitats.

It is an inhabitant of the vas uado


This is the second largest marine mammal that has been recorded in the state. Like Blue whale, this species too is a baleen whale that feeds on planktons etc. using filter-feeding technique. It was recorded in the state in 1847, 1919 and 1943.
