Beautiful, bright coloured squirrel of large size, overall reddish maroon brown Description appearance. Tail darker, legs and face golden-orangish. Tail is larger than rest of the body.

Distribution
The giant squirrel can be met with in Kalvat, Tunkaner and Duthar of Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary and parts of the Dang forests.
Habitat
Dense deciduous, mixed deciduous and moist areas deciduous forests. :
Behaviour
This large squirrel is crepuscular, agile and active; yet very shy. It moves from tree to tree with long leaps, rests during midday. It makes repeated rattling and also produces variety of alarm calls.
Signs of presence
More heard than seen. Loud repeated rattling call reveals its presence.
The Indian giant squirrel inhabits upper-canopy of trees and it rarely leaves the trees. It requires tall and heavily branched trees for nest construction., It can jump up to 6 m while traveling from tree to tree. When in danger, it often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of running away. Raptors and leopard are its main enemies.
