* Description  

Smaller size,shorter tail,brownish grey color of the body s p e c k l e d  with b l a c k i h dark brown hairs.

* Food   

Mainly carnivorous.feeds on hares,rats,snakes,frogs,eggs of birds and insects.

* Distribution 

All over the state.

* Habitat 

It inhabits fields,farms,grasslands,forests and thorny area.

* Behaviour 

Diurnal.It lives in burrows dug by itself.

* Signs of presence 

Pugmarks, track along hedges.

Is it bad to feed mongoose? There are two races of thid species. One of them lves in/near deset areas and has pale coat,whereas other one that lives in fertile areas of north India has dark brown coat minutely speckled with golden color .It is a cautious animal that always lives under some cover.the young ones are quite helpless and dependent on mother .Like a mother cat,The mother mongoose restlessly moves her young ones from one place to the other.
