Breeding : Mainly March - May, but can also be during other months It powerful
Description
It is a massive, powerful animal with wider horn span than any other bovid. This buffalo is slaty black in color with dirty white colour up to the knees.
Food
Herbivorous. Feeds on grass & crops.
Distribution
Survived in the Dangs in Gujarat till 1960s. Exist in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh (especially in Bastar)
Habitat
Tall grass jungle & reed brakes in the neighbourhood of swamps.
Behaviour
Graze mainly in the mornings & evenings and sometimes at night. When crops are growing, the buffaloes can enter the fields, from where they can be scarcely removed. Boldest of the Indian bovids.

Aftrican buffalo is not closely related to the Wild buffalo of India/Asia. Asian wild buffale has been the ancestor of our domesticated water buffalo. The domesticated water buffalo is the product of thousands of years of selective breeding carried out by ancient Asian civilizations, especially in India.
