Barasingha is characterized by its twelve horns
Barasinga is a deer species. This animal is found more in India as well as Nepal. The peculiarity of this animal is its horns, which are in the number of bars. Barasingha inhabits northern and central India. This species of deer is found more in the plains of the Ganges. It is also found in the forest.
Three subspecies of Barasingha exist. Western Barasinga which is found in the Gangetic plains and in Nepal. It has about twelve horns on its head. However some barasingas also have twenty horns. While a normal deer has only two horns. Barasinga is a social animal that lives in the group. An adult barasingha weighs between 150 and 200 k.g. As well as their height is about three to four feet. Barasingas are larger than a normal deer. This deer has long hair on its neck. Their color is dark orange or light brown. The color of the male barasingha is brighter than that of the female. Barasinga is a herbivorous animal. It only heals grass-leaves. This animal drinks a lot of water whether it is hot or cold. It mainly eats leaves, twigs, fruits etc. of trees. They also care for plants that grow in the water. HunterAnimals like leopards and tigers are their enemies. Humans are also considered to be the enemy of Barasingha. Humans hunt them for their horns and flesh.
The male Barasing fights with the horns to form a relationship with the female. The winning male barasingha forms a relationship with the female. Males mate with about 30 to 40 females in one season. They mostly form a relationship during the summer season. The female Barasinga gives birth to a cub after about eight months of gestation. Barasinga is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh (1). This deer grazes all day long. They are more active during the day than at night(2). At the present time the Barasinga animal is on the verge of extinction. Earlier this animal was found in many countries of Asia but now it is limited to India and Nepal.
